They work on two platforms. The first and simplest, is the IN platform, which does basic number translation and reporting. By re-routing non-geographic numbers (e.g. 03, 0845, 0800) to geographic numbers, your customers won’t know — and don’t need to know – that they may be calling another country. And they certainly won’t be paying long distance charges for it.
The second platform is called ECT and is more suitable for bigger call centres, simply because there’s more flexibility built into it. With ECT, you can decide when and where your non-geographic numbers are rerouted, which is ideal if you’re running a time-sensitive promotion for example. You can also divert a particular number to a specific person or team for a certain period of time. Perhaps your weekday hours and staff are different than at the weekend.
