What are backhaul networks?
Backhaul is the term used to describe an intermediate link between an aggregation point and another destination in the network. Generally, we talk about three types of fixed network backhaul:
Local backhaul
network
Typically, takes traffic from a street cabinet to a local aggregation site, like a local Virgin Media O2 PoP or BT exchange.
Regional backhaul
network
Collects traffic from a local aggregation point and delivers it to a larger regional site where Virgin Media O2 - or another national backhaul network provider — has a core PoP.
National backhaul
network
Takes traffic from the regional aggregation points to and point, like a; core network site, internet breakout or data centre.
